<h3><strong>The story of education in the North Yorkshire village of Bishop Monkton might seem a rather straightforward matter. </strong></h3><p></p><p>A village school opened here in 1849 and it is still here in 2025 having acquired a new site in 1971. It is just one of more than 16000 primary schools in England. </p><p>However there is so much more to the story.</p><p></p><p>The school's development is inextricably interwoven with social economic and cultural changes in Bishop Monkton over the past two centuries. It is also in microcosm part of a national story-the story of how education itself and the ideas underpinning it have developed across the country.</p><p></p><p>Also this is not just about the education of children. The Mechanics' Institution opened in 1859 founded on the Victorian ideal of self-improvement for the working classes provided adult education here for more than a century. The 'Mickey' as it was affectionately known was unusual for such a small community. </p><p></p><p></p>
