About The Book
Description
Author
The novel is set in the English countryside in the summer of 1939 just before the outbreak of World War II. It takes place during a single day in the fictional village of Pointz Hall where the villagers are preparing for their annual pageant an amateur theatrical performance held in the grounds of the local estate. The pageant serves as a backdrop for the characters reflections on art history and the state of society. The narrative of Between the Acts is fragmented and experimental reflecting Woolfs stream-of-consciousness writing style. The story shifts between the perspectives of different characters exploring their inner thoughts memories and perceptions of the world around them. Through these shifting perspectives Woolf explores themes of time memory the role of art and the complexities of human relationships. One of the central characters is Mrs. Manresa the wife of the local landowner who becomes a focal point for the various narrative threads. As the novel progresses the reader is given glimpses into the lives of other characters including members of the Oliver family who are preparing the pageant and the villagers who participate in the performance. Between the Acts is often seen as a reflection on the passing of time and the transience of human existence. It explores the tensions between tradition and progress the fragility of social structures and the impact of historical events on individuals and communities. The novel also touches on themes of gender class and sexuality as Woolf often did in her works.
