Between the Acts

The novel is set in the English countryside in the summer of 1939 just before the outbreak of World War II. It takes place during a single day in the fictional village of Pointz Hall where the villagers are preparing for their annual pageant an amateur theatrical performance held in the grounds of the local estate. The pageant serves as a backdrop for the characters reflections on art history and the state of society.
