About The Book

The novel is set in India during the British colonial period and explores themes of faith cultural differences and redemption. The story centers around a young British protagonist Lionel Desborough who travels to India for personal and professional reasons. Once there he becomes embroiled in the cultural and social tensions that exist between the British colonials and the native Indian population. Lionel’s journey takes a spiritual turn as he navigates the challenges of living in a foreign land. He encounters both British expatriates and Indian characters many of whom test his understanding of faith morality and the human condition. The title Beyond the Black Waters is symbolic referring not only to the physical distance between England and India but also to the emotional and spiritual chasms Lionel must cross.
