Basic periodontal treatment aims at eliminating supra- and subgingival plaque and establishing conditions which will allow effective self performed plaque control. Mechanical periodontal therapy consists of scaling root planning and gingival curettage. In the past this aim was primarily realized with hand held instruments ( sicklecurettes chisel files and hoes) until sonic and ultrasonic scalers were designed for gross scaling and removal of supragingival calculus and stain
