Argentina's link with Antarctic lands dates back to the beginning of the 20th century when Argentine personnel took part in the Nordenskjold expedition (1901-1903) as a result of which the first meteorological station was established in the South Orkney Islands which has operated uninterruptedly ever since. Since 1951 with the creation of the Argentine Antarctic Institute a systematic occupation plan was organized through campaigns carried out every summer and the installation of a series of scientific stations and military and naval bases. Argentine Antarctica is based on rights of proximity and continuous and uninterrupted occupation since 1904.
