Brother Jacob

The novella tells the story of David Faux a young man who is desperate to escape his mundane life and achieve success. Inspired by his religious fervor and a belief that divine intervention will bring him good fortune David decides to embark on a journey to Siena Italy. He hopes to claim an inheritance left to him by a distant relative. However Davids plans take an unexpected turn when he encounters various setbacks and misfortunes along the way. Through a series of humorous and ironic events Eliot satirizes religious pretensions and highlights the human tendency to interpret events in ways that align with ones desires and beliefs. Brother Jacob offers a critique of religious fanaticism and blind faith as well as a commentary on the nature of ambition and the pursuit of material success.
