The word family seems to carry more weight in a small town or rural setting. Without the fast pace and crowded conditions people with blood ties accumulate and tend to turn to their own for the things that are gained elsewhere from bowling teams the performing arts soup kitchens or support groups. The need to be entertained or helpful or competitive or cared for (and about) seems to be more easily and simply met where time and space are plentiful.
