Rheims is a beautiful ancient cathedral city which was briefly occupied by the German Army in 1914 Infuriated at not being able to hold the city it first set a fire on the outside of the Cathedral and then after leaving heavily bombarded the city during the remainder of the First World War. The villages around Rheims were also destroyed to a large extent with trench warfare in the area. There is a detailed description of the many battles and offensives with a number of battle maps and a map of the bombardments of the city as well as a map to guide sightseeing through the city and battlefields.
