Rheims is a beautiful ancient cathedral city which was briefly occupied by the German Army in 1914 Infuriated at not being able to hold the city it first set a fire on the outside of the Cathedral and then after leaving heavily bombarded the city during the remainder of the First World War. The villages around Rheims were also destroyed to a large extent with trench warfare in the area.
