Despite her profession Armand is eager to leave the city and start a life with Marguerite. Unfortunately their romance is plagued by public ridicule and Marguerite's deteriorating health. In an effort to protect Armand's name and status Marguerite makes a daring sacrifice that leaves him yearning for closure and peace.</p><p><i>Camille</i> is arguably Alexandre Dumas' most celebrated work. Shortly after its publication it was adapted into a stage play followed by an opera called <i>La Traviata</i>. This success also led to more than 20 film adaptations starting in 1915.
