About The Book

On May17 2006 Captain Nichola Goddard was killed in a firefight in Afghanistan. She was the first Canadian officer to be killed in Afghanistan. She was the first Canadian artillery officer to call fire down since the Korean War. She was also the first female Canadian soldier ever to be killed in combat. She was much more than that.In the decade since her death Canadians have been moved by her life and her death to create monuments in her honour. These range from a Coast Guard ship off the B.C. coast to playgrounds in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario and Charlottetown PEI; from a sword at the Royal Military College to a lake in northern Saskatchewan; from a bagpipe lament to a number 1 charting song by the Trews; from quilts to paintings to scholarships to trig markers. This is her story.
