CAPACITY ASSESSMENT OF RESPONDERS IN URBAN SEARCH & RESCUE

About The Book

This book is culmination of researcher interest on preparedness capacity of first responders to provide lifesaving support to survivors affected by collapsed buildings in urban areas in Kenya. In the past 20 years Kenya and many developing countries has witnessed explosion of urbanization coupled with population growth that have resulted in demand for housing and general infrastructure expansion in urban areas. During collapsed building incidences for example trapped people have needlessly died or got avoidable injuries which could have been prevented if those who attempt to rescue them did so competently. The book gives an account of the institutional capacity of First Line Response Organizations involved in urban search and rescue (USAR) in Nairobi and Mombasa Counties. The research covers the human physical and financial capacities of First Line Response Organizations along with the strategic options that these organizations could provide. Findings and recommendations of this research will strengthen First Line Response Organizations and collaboration between First Line Response Organizations during disaster response.
