Amigo a ten year old boy living during the 1935 Depression period son of a welfare recipient befriends a group of carnival people performing in town and he is subjected to a series of startling as well as pleasant events that contribute to his character growth and development. He is naive due to the absence of any meaningful learning experiences. Lupe Amigo's armless Mexican friend and mentor is a man of honor and integrity and he proves to be an effective role model for the lad demonstrating a great capacity for persevering through pain and suffering. Arlene song and dance performer an attractive young lady with strong moral values also befriends the boy. She is in love with Lupe determined to overcome his objections to a romantic relationship between them.
