Casey At The Bat (1912)

Casey At The Bat is a poem written by Phineas Thayer in 1888 which became one of the most famous American poems of all time. The poem tells the story of a baseball game in which the fate of the team rests on the shoulders of a player named Casey. The poem is set in the fictional town of Mudville where the home team is down by two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. The crowd is restless and they are hoping that Casey will come up to bat and hit a home run to win the game. When Casey finally steps up to the plate the tension is palpable and the poem builds to a dramatic climax. However to the dismay of the fans Casey strikes out and the Mudville team loses the game. The poem is a classic example of American literary humor and has been adapted into various forms of media including films plays and musicals.
