Cementum

About The Book

Cementum is the avascular bone-like tissue which forms a thin surface layer throughout the surface of tooth roots. It is structurally unique within the body and unlike the other tissues of the periodontium it does not normally undergo remodeling. Cementum performs two essential functions: first to provide the attachment of the tooth to the alveolar bone by insertion of periodontal ligament fibers; and second to prevent root resorption during remodeling of the periodontium.
