In recent years the aesthetics of the orthodontic appliance has become a topic of great interest with increasing number of adults receiving orthodontic treatment. An expectation of beautiful smiles at the end of orthodontic treatment is a primary concern to each patient but the patient is equally concerned with appearance while undergoing treatment. Many attempts have been made by manufacturers to meet this demand. The first step towards a more aesthetic orthodontic appliance was the introduction in 1965 of acid etching and the Bowen type resins which led to the substitution of metal bands by directly cemented brackets To meet this demand further metal brackets were made smaller.
