<p>Sri Lankan women have played a crucial role in developing and shaping that country’s national identity history and culture. They were not a monolithic group but different in so many disparate ways like religion ethnicity language caste and race. Their history is the story of challenges and transformation. Adding to this socio-cultural milieu was the introduction of European colonialism languages customs and traditions. Although they have come a long waytheir struggle for equality and freedom is continuing. They in spite of changes and developments of the last several decades continue to suffer many inequalities and indignities.As a result they continue to play a subordinate role in both public and privae spheres of life.</p>
