Characteristics of suicidal individuals and factors in suicidal recidivism

The frequency of suicide attempts (SA) is constantly increasing in Tunisia. The aim of this study was to investigate the sociodemographic and clinical profile of suicidal patients consulting psychiatry at the Gabès regional hospital and to determine the factors associated with suicidal recidivism. The profile of the suicidal patient was female (76.4%) average age 24 years single (67.6%) secondary school level (50.7%) average and low socioeconomic level. The prevalence of suicidal recidivism was 24.3%.It was statistically associated with smoking (p=0.048)non-rural origin (p=0.018)self-mutilation(p<0.001)difficulty in coping with stress(p=0.005)notion of patient abuse(p=0.028)post-ST stress (p=0.012)recent worsening of psychiatric signs(p=0.013)verbalization of suicidal intent(p=0.001)desire to re-offend(p=0.01)hopeless future plans(p=0.05) and poor quality of family support(p<0001).
