Characterization of Human-Elephant Conflicts in the Department of Sikensi

About The Book

The clandestine occupation of national parks by certain farmers has put their lives at risk. Elephants in these protected areas no longer knowing where to go pop up in plantations as well as camps and claim victims. A study was carried out in August and September 2014 with the aim of characterizing human-elephant conflicts in the Sikensi locality. To this end the use of a questionnaire made it possible to collect farmers'' opinions. Survey data were supplemented by direct observations in the field. A great deal of damage is caused to crops when elephants raid fields. Large areas of crops are destroyed. Crops are attacked at critical stages such as ripening intermediate and young. Food crops remain the worst affected.
