Charles IX: Ou L'Ecole Des Rois is a tragedy written by Marie Joseph Chenier in 1790. The play is set during the French Wars of Religion and portrays the events leading up to the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre in which thousands of Huguenots were killed in Paris. The main character King Charles IX is torn between his duty to his mother Catherine de' Medici and his love for his Protestant friend Henry of Navarre. The play explores themes of power loyalty and betrayal as well as the consequences of religious conflict. It was well-received by audiences at the time of its publication and has since become a classic of French literature.This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
