He covered rebels in Africa civil wars in Indochina peace talks in the Middle East and scandal in the White House. Not all of it was grim and daring. Central Africa was his first assignment as a foreign correspondent and the 1965 coup detat in the Congo was the first of many abrupt regime changes he reported from the scene.
