Chichuá (Xixuá)

The species Maytenus guianensis is a medium-sized tree endemic to the Amazon rainforest known as: (chichuá xixuá chuchahuasi chucchu huashu chuchuasi and chuchasha). Its roots and stem are used in traditional medicine for their supposed analgesic muscle relaxant healing insecticide immunosuppressant anti-inflammatory antiulcerogenic antirheumatic antidiarrheal antibacterial antifungal anthelmintic antiprotozoal antitumor aphrodisiac and gynecological demonstrating great ethnopharmacological potential to be explored. This book demonstrates the antigenotoxic effects of the species in tests conducted with plant and animal models.
