Leo Tolstoys first book Childhood appeared in the November 1852 issue of the well-known Russian literary periodical The Contemporary under the initials L. N. It is the first book of a trilogy that also includes Boyhood and Youth. The novel which Tolstoy published while he was only 23 years old became an instant hit. It brought Tolstoy to the attention of other Russian novelists such as Ivan Turgenev who hailed the young Tolstoy as a significant figure in Russian literatures emerging generation. Nikolenka a little kid has his inner existence examined in Childhood. One of the expressionist books in Russian literature it combines fact fiction and emotions to capture the narrators feelings and moods.
