Leo Tolstoy's first book Childhood appeared in the November 1852 issue of the well-known Russian literary periodical The Contemporary under the initials L. N.It is the first book of a trilogy that also includes Boyhood and Youth. The novel which Tolstoy published while he was only 23 years old became an instant hit.
