China Friend or Foe

<p>From Secretary of State John Hay's first attempt to open up the Chinese market through the Open Door Policy in 1900 to President Obama's current approach to engage China on the world stage our nation at times has been unable to formulate an effective foreign policy approach towards China. Indifferent to each administration's desire to either solidify our alliance with Japan in order to bring balance to East Asia or our half-hearted attempts to engage China in belief they will become a and quot;responsible stakeholder and quot; on the international stage we have spent little time focusing on a region that will become vitally important in our lifetime.</p><p>This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
