The first Leper Colony in Eastern Nigeria was established at Itu in present Akwa Ibom State by the then Church of Scotland Mission (now Presbyterian Church) in 1928. There Leprosy patients were assembled and efforts were made to cure and care for them. They were mainly Leprosy sufferers from the old Calabar province. This book's emphasis is on the leper colony at Uzuakoli the history-making and resourceful town located in the Igbo heartland 12 miles north of Umuahia; the later is the capital of Abia State of Nigeria.
