This book includes articles written by Kai Le Kai in the 1880s and early 1990s for publications such as Wen Hui Bao. The content of the book covers Shanghai's theater performances waterworks matchstick factories rickshaw drivers printing factories police officers servants courts libraries museums and more. The book also describes the author's observations and experiences during his travels from Shanghai to Hankou Beijing and western China. This book provides valuable historical materials for us to understand the changes in daily life of Shanghai society in the nearly fifty years since its opening as a port as well as the Western view of China.
