The first story The Highland Widow is about a woman who is determined to avenge her husband''s death. The second story The Two Drovers is about two rival drovers who travel to England to sell their cattle. The third story The Surgeon''s Daughter is about a young woman who disguises herself as a man in order to follow her lover to India. The stories are linked together by a framing narrative in which the narrator Chrystal Croftangry tells the stories to his friends. Croftangry is a retired businessman who is living in the Canongate a historic district in Edinburgh. Chronicles of the Canongate is one of Scott''s most popular and critically acclaimed works.
