Critical illness polyneuropathy is not a new disease that occurs in the context of intensive care. Despite extensive research in recent years its pathological processes are not yet fully understood. Furthermore no specific rehabilitation programmes supported by studies have been developed. Overall the therapeutic approach is supportive and preventive and therapeutic measures must be individually tailored to the patient's symptoms. These are described and explained in detail here. The article also clarifies how CIP is defined how the term came about what pathological processes underlie it and what the risk factors are. The consequences of CIP and its effects on outcomes and quality of life should not be ignored so that more attention should be paid to preventive nursing measures in many areas.
