City-systems in Advanced Economies

<p>Originally published in 1977. This book provides answers to two fundamental and interrelated questions about the modern city. First what are the processes underlying the past and present growth of ‘post-industrial’ metropolitan complexes and the economically advanced city-systems to which they belong? Second what are the implications of on-going growth for efforts to reduce interregional inequalities of employment opportunity? The first section of the book introduces the basic concepts such as the properties of systems of cities. It then provides an analysis of their growth in advanced economies during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and looks to further possibilities.</p>
