COLLAGEN IN HEALTH & DISEASE

Collagen a triple helical and unique protein is abundant in the all the species. It is chemically and genetically distinct macromolecule a which aggregates to form fibers and constitutes the basement membrane of the connective tissue. It represents a major part of the extracellular matrix in the human body and constitutes to about 30% of the dry weight. It has a key role in the normal functioning of the body being present in skin connective tissues tendons cartilage and bones.
