William McGonagalls poetry is characterized by its earnestness despite its lack of technical finesse. He wrote on a variety of subjects including historical events nature and even contemporary occurrences. One of his most famous and widely known poems is The Tay Bridge Disaster in which he commemorates a tragic railway bridge collapse in Dundee Scotland in 1879. While McGonagalls poetry may not meet the conventional standards of quality his enthusiastic and sincere approach has found a place in literary history. His works have been the subject of parodies readings and performances that celebrate their unintentional comedic value.
