Seen as a messenger of God by a disturbed youth John Scrounge has in reality such a dark vision of life that he retreats from the world as a librarian's assistant. Convinced by a series of encounters that he must be more of a monster than a man Scrounge flees one night arriving at the gate of Greymore Prison.<p> There he is found by a high-ranking guard who brings him home but soon finds his young daughter infatuated with the houseguest.
