Contest for the throne that culminated in the Battle of Hastings (1066) in which William the Conqueror defeated Harold and became king of England. Shortly after the battle William erected Battle Abbey on the site of the con?ict and supposedly placed therein a roll containing the names of his followers from Normandy. The authenticity of this Battle Abbey Roll has been questioned in recent years but is nevertheless considered a source of information concerning the surnames current among the Normans and introduced into England at that time. Later in his reign William ordered a complete census of all England to be made.
