Reflections and discussions about comprehensive schools as well as the search for an increasingly civic-minded school have been taking shape and gaining ground in studies on education and society in Brazil. The aim of this research was to understand what teachers and parents think about comprehensive schools and to analyse the extent to which these schools are or are not citizen schools. The focus group study provides important insights into different perspectives on the purpose of comprehensive schools and their implications for the search for a civic school.
