About The Book

The idea of the present book is to make a student with normal mathematical background comfortable with the subject of numerical methods. The book would also serve as a reference for a practicing engineer who is interested in applications. The contents of the book have been laid out in a simple manner such that the essence of each numerical method is clearly stated. This would make it easy for an engineer and an early researcher/graduate student to follow the material presented <B>Contents </B>Preface Acknowledgments 1 Preliminaries 2 Solution of linear equations 3 Computation of eigenvalues 4 Solution of algebraic equations 5 Interpolation 6 Interpolation in two and three dimensions 7 Regression or curve fitting 8 Numerical Differentiation 9 Numerical Integration 10 Initial value problems 11 Boundary value problems (ODE) 12 Introduction to PDEs 13 Laplace and Poisson equations 14 Advection and diffusion equations 15 Wave equation 16 Application Examples Epilogue Beyond the book - the way ahead Researchers developing their own code Users of commercial code Where does one look for help? After spending three years at Yale University he joined the IIT Madras in 1982. He retired as Professor and Head Dept. of Mechnical Engineering and served as Professor Emeritus for 4 years thereafter. He has since been Professor Emeritus and Advisor at IIITDM Kancheepuram. He has taught subjects related to Heat Transfer thermodynamics Measurements and Computational Methods. His research interests are: (a) Radiation heat transfer (b) Conjugate heat transfer —experimental and numerical (b) Measurement of thermo-physical properties by inverse heat transfer methods © Instrumentation. He has graduated 30 doctoral candidates and 25 Master's by Research candidates while at IIT Madras. He also served as Head Regional Sophisticated Instrumentation Centre (RSIC) at IIT Madras for 5 years. In addition to more than 200 published research papers to his credit Prof. Venkateshan has also authored two other books namely Heat Transfer now in 3rd edn and Mechanical Measurements now in 2nd edn published by Ane Books Pvt Ltd. Dr. Prasanna Swaminathan obtained his Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology Madras in 2013 under the guidance of Prof. S. P. Venkateshan. After working as a postdoctoral researcher in different laboratories in the Paris region he joined as a full-time researcher at LSPM a CNRS laboratory associated with University Sorbonne Paris Nord Paris in 2016. His main area of interest is modelling and designing microwave based plasma sources for elaboration of novel materials such as CVD diamond and graphene. His initiation into the world of computation happened while he was a doctoral student during which he assisted Prof. S. P. Venkateshan for the course Computational methods in Engineering for close to three years.
