Conjunctive Use of Different Water Sources in Budiriro Zimbabwe

About The Book

The study was carried out from June 2018 to July 2020. The purpose of this study was to critically look at demand based planning model for the distribution of water from different locally available sources in the high density suburb of Budiriro as an option of supplying water for domestic and other uses. Multi-stage sampling was done. Budiriro a suburb in Harare was selected as the study area due to the serious water shortage which has forced residents to rely on unsafe water sources resulting in the area being endemic to waterborne diseases. A proportionate stratified sampling was used in selecting participants. Systematic sampling was used to choose housing units from the seven areas in Budiriro. Two hundred and thirty-seven (237) household heads were interviewed and 72 water samples were collected from boreholes wells and water harvesters. The water samples were analyzed for physical chemical and bacteriological parameters. The quality of water was compared to World Health Organisation and Zimbabwean standards. From the results sixteen percent (16%) of the boreholes and 56% of wells sampled did not meet the WHO total and faecal coliform standards of zero per 100ml.
