About The Book

This book is a study of the interethnic contacts alliances and conflicts maintained by the Bororo Indians in the 18th and 19th centuries acting as active subjects and participants in the historical process of Mato Grosso. Some aspects of their socio-spatial organization are presented with the intention of illustrating the changes resulting from inter-ethnic contacts through the presence of non-Indians (bandeirantes monarchists adventurers generally from the São Paulo region) and the consequent dispute over territory (from 1718 onwards) exposing not only how inter-ethnic relations expanded (conflicts with bandeirantes the new local society and other Indians) but also how the Bororo themselves faced each of these phases from hunting Indians to forming settlements in their territories.
