About The Book

Corporate America and the African American woman is a book that discusses the challenges black women face in the workplace. There is a small percentage of African American women in leadership positions in corporate America and this book discusses the stereotypes and other challenges that black women currently face and why they are often overlooked for promotional opportunities. Kym Strong who is a respected accountant with 13 years experience working with Fortune 500 companies in upper management decided to give African American women insight into what companies look for when it comes to leadership roles and positions. This book also pulls together a wealth of experiences and anecdotes from other African American women in leadership roles as well as career experts who can offer advice on how to move up the corporate ladder as a black woman. There are currently a total of 6 black CEOs of Fortune 500 companies which only take up 1.2% of all 500 companies. Of the six only one of them is a woman. Ursula Burns of Xerox who is the first and only ever African American woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company. There is an abundance of opportunity for African American women in corporate America but there is a need to discuss what challenges we face that may prevent us from moving up the ladder.
