<ul> <li> Studies popular conservatism prior to 1867; analyses political attitudes of non-voters in a time where popular conservatism is often thought of as non-existing.</li> <li> Links debates on popular loyalism in the late 18<sup>th</sup> century with debates on popular conservatism in the late 19<sup>th</sup> century; and covers a research gap.</li> <li> Based on a comparative study of three constituencies (most existing literature focusses on one particular place) and adds material from a wide range of different localities all over England.</li> <li> Combines study of local popular politics with analyses of wide range of popular rituals and popular culture.</li></ul>
