CUENTOS DE LA ABUELA is the Spanish translation of “Burhi Aai'r Xaadhu”(Grandma's tales) a collection of folktales from the Indian state of Assam. The original book compiled by Sahityarathi Lakshminath Bezbaruah was first published in the year 1911. Also known as Roshoraj (king of humour) he was one of the literary stalwarts of 'Junaki era' the age of romanticism in Assamese literature. Although primarily intended for children these folktales are an important component of Assamese folklore. The magic of Bezbaruah's tale has been an intrinsic and inseperable part of the Assamese culture and literature. It has inspired and captivated the thoughts and imaginations of Assamese children for generations and generations for more than hundreds of years. Apart from being an absolute delight in the form of wild imagination these tales also imparts important lessons on moral values. CUENTOS DE LA ABUELA is a humble effort to share these regional folktales with a greater number of readers. Using the international language Spanish as a medium its hoped that young readers get to read and have a little insight into the Assamese folklore. However the stories here should not be treated as literal translations of the originals. Some translations had to be changed in order to fit into a foreign language.
