Current and Future Potential of Gastroretentive Drug Delivery System

Gastroretentive drug delivery systems are designed to extend gastric retention time and enable controlled or sustained drug release. This approach enhances drug concentration at the target site potentially improving bioavailability and reducing the required dosage. Over the past decades various technologies have been developed each employing different mechanisms to prolong drug retention in the gastrointestinal tract while optimizing bioavailability. Extensive research has been conducted on several gastroretentive strategies including floatable mucoadhesive swellable magnetic nanofibrous high-density and expandable systems.
