His grandfatherJames Bordeaux was one of the early French furtraders who bravely carried on his trade and barterwith the Sioux when the virgin prairies of the westwere still an open frontier.<br><br>A lineal descendent of Red Cormorant Woman[H��ntk��lutawin] his grandmother he was wellversed in his mother tongue. Being proficient inseveral dialects of the native language he was ableto converse with sage and grizzled old warriorsand thus obtain information impossible for awhite man to learn. His close union with his owntribe and daily conversations with them is an assurance that no doubtful ortranscribed evidence will appear on these pages.<br><br>In Bordeaux's search for material for a history of his people he spentconsiderable time traveled and talked to the oldest Indians on thedifferent Sioux Indian Reservations. Through his research he stored up andaccumulated a wealth of stories and legends with awe inspiring fables andfacts which would be valuable to story writers.<br><br>These fragmentary myths and authentic facts connected with his peoplewould have been lost without these writings.
