Daisy Miller A Study in Two Parts

The novella is divided into two parts. In the first part the reader is introduced to Daisy Miller a vibrant and independent young woman from Schenectady New York. She is traveling in Europe with her mother and younger brother. Daisy is considered unconventional by European standards as she often interacts with men including the main protagonist of the story Frederick Winterbourne in a more casual and friendly manner. Winterbourne an American expatriate residing in Europe becomes fascinated by Daisys charm and vivacity. However he is also aware of the strict social codes of European society which frown upon the kind of freedom and openness exhibited by Daisy. This creates a tension within Winterbourne as he tries to reconcile his attraction to Daisy with his adherence to societal norms. The second part of the novella shifts the setting to Rome where Daisy continues to attract attention and provoke gossip among the American expatriate community. Winterbourne remains intrigued by Daisy but is increasingly concerned about her behavior which is viewed as scandalous by some. He becomes aware of Daisys association with an Italian man named Mr. Giovanelli which further raises eyebrows and intensifies the scrutiny she faces. As the story progresses Winterbourne grapples with his own judgments and conflicted feelings towards Daisy. He questions whether she is merely naive and ignorant of the social customs she is disregarding or if she is intentionally flouting societal expectations. Winterbournes own reputation becomes entangled with Daisys and he must decide how to navigate the complexities of their relationship.
