In a grungy megalopolis where magical ability is a medical disorder controlled and treated by the church acolyte Yusef struggles between loyalty to his faith and to Iviki the demon who saved his life when the church failed. But are the favors Iviki asks for in return really just part of a scheme to get revenge against those who have stolen from him? Hamud a necromancer in league with Yusef by Iviki's design prepares for the worst but his theory is a dangerous suggestion to Ilean the mysterious sorcerer Iviki has left in Hamud's care. Meanwhile the church's proclaimed son of god suspects the king's ward of conspiring against the church and a former mental patient the son of a member of parliament enlists the help of an alcoholic engineer to take on the government's Eye of God project.
