Through these encounters Gogol satirizes and criticizes the corrupt bureaucracy social hierarchy and moral decay of Russian society in the 19th century. The title Dead Souls reflects the metaphorical weight and emptiness of the souls Chichikov seeks to acquire. The novel explores themes of greed moral bankruptcy and the dehumanizing effect of societal norms and expectations. Gogols writing style in Dead Souls is characterized by its dark humor vivid descriptions and the use of grotesque and exaggerated characters.
