This book offers cross-national and longitudinal comparisons of democratic transition since 1900. Through these comparisons the authors theoretically explore and quantitatively test the empirical relationship between transitional modes and democratic outcomes. A major contribution of this study is the creation of a cross-national dataset of all democratic transitioning states since 1900 which is accomplished through detailed case studies and cross-verification with widely renowned works on transitions. This is the first study to test statistically the impact of mode of transition on the quality and durability of democracy.
