The book explored the use of computer simulation utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the design of photobioreactors (PBRs)intended for mass production of microalgae. The simulation approach was strongly validated using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). In an engineering perspective the structural configuration and design of PBRs have critical role in the flow hydrodynamics inside the bioreactor which are very significant in providing ideal growth conditions for microalgae cells. To save time labor and resources computer modelling was employed. However no standard is available in the selection of appropriate PBRs. Thus based on the hydrodynamic parameters a set of criterion was introduced. The selected PBR design was tested with experimental results further proved the applicability of the simulation approach. The CFD technique have demonstrated its capability in investigating flow hydrodynamics inside the bioreactor resulting to better design of efficient and effective PBRs for optimized cultivation of microalgae.
