Determinants of household health expenditures in Mali in 2010

About The Book

The general objective of this study is to analyze household health expenditures according to their sociodemographic and economic characteristics and in particular to establish a list of determinants of per capita health expenditures. The study estimates the average annual per capita health expenditure at 79425 F CFA. The district of Bamako and the region of Koulikoro are the main contributors to health expenditure taking half of it. The share of rural areas in total household health expenditure is 3/5. It almost doubles that of the urban area. In the search for determinants of per capita health expenditure per capita income household size and the number of women aged 15-49 explain it more significantly. Household per capita health expenditure increases with household per capita income but to a lesser extent. These latter results mean that wealthy households spend more per member on health but they allocate a smaller proportion to it than less affluent ones with larger households paying less per household member.
