In the Caribbean type 2 diabetes is one of the leading health problems contributing significantly to morbidity and mortality and is more common in females than in males. The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (Republic T&T) has one of the highest incidences of diabetes per capita in the western hemisphere. In the Republic T&T diabetes is the second leading cause of death and the prevalence rate is approximately 12% - 13%. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness and limb amputations in the Republic T&T.
